Within the last year or two, I’ve slowly, but surely, become interested in astrology. While I don’t believe in the horoscope and future telling aspect of the craft, the personality indications and zodiac profile descriptions have been very interesting. As a social scientist, and certified people watcher, I find that there is a correlation between the way people operate and their zodiac signs. A lot of people dispute this idea, as the philosophies that support Astrology can’t be tested nor replicated; nevertheless, I firmly trust in the idea that there are factors that affect our world, methods, and levels of consciousness that we can’t necessarily test or see.
For those that aren’t familiar with how the Zodiac works, I’ll attempt to break it down to the best of my ability:
When a person is born the celestial bodies are in a specific orientation. Time is of the essence, and is taken into consideration: month, year, date, and time of birth. Based upon the configuration of the bodies and their relation to other stellar beings, such as the Sun and Moon, a person is said to have a strong proclivity toward a certain set characteristics. This is known as a person’s chart. A chart is usually represented graphically and denotes where the planets, The Sun, The Moon, and the constellations are in relation to each other. Below is a list briefly explaining what celestial entity is correlated with what psychosocial aspect:
Sun – Fundamental Values and external experience of the world
Moon – Internal experience of the world; emotions
Mercury – Analysis, articulations, and communication
Venus – Pleasures, partnering, and associations
Mars – Passion, sexuality, and drive
Jupiter – Meaning and spirituality
Saturn – Structure, organization, and law
Uranus – Theory, opinions, and renewal
Neptune – Mysticism, imagination, and privacy
Pluto – Obsession, power, ruthlessness
I’m willing to believe that most people have heard someone ask, “What’s your sign?” When someone is talking about their “sign” they’re usually speaking about their sun sign. There are twelve signs in the zodiac: Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius. Each of these “signs” have an animal representation (except Libra) that resembles the composition if its corresponding constellation. An individual’s sun sign is found by calculating which constellation’s proximity the sun was in during his or her birthday. For example, I was born April 25th. Between April 21 and May 20, the sun is in the proximity of the constellation “Taurus,” thus I am associated with the sign of the same name: Taurus. It is, also, said that my fundamental values and world experiences are seen through a Taurean lens.
Given the complicated, and taboo, nature of all of this, I would encourage everyone to research it for himself or herself. Give it a strong objective look! I did, and found that my chart has a strong correlation to my Myers-Briggs Type Indicator . Once again, I would never say that The Zodiac is a tool of prediction or the “end-all-be-all” when it comes to personality, but this offers a unique ideology and perspective. Give it a chance!
